When people asked Liuba Grechen Shirley what she needed to run for office, she replied “child care.” They told her they couldn’t help with that, but luckily for us, Liuba ran anyway, even though she had a 1 year old and a 3 year old.
Liuba got catapulted into national fame when she made a request to the Federal Election Commission to use her campaign funds to pay for child care while she was running for the House of Representatives to unseat incumbent Rep. Peter King.
Spoiler alert… Liuba didn’t win, but that was the beginning of a beautiful chapter. Liuba is now a fierce advocate helping mothers all across the country run for office through Vote Mama, an organization that helps Democratic moms with children run for office.
We discuss running for office while raising two toddlers and pandemic pregnancies (Liuba gave birth at the height of the pandemic!).
We also discuss why child care is a racial equity issue and why we need more moms and working people in office! She is helping moms get elected through Vote Mama, which has a foundation, an action fund and PAC.
WHY DO WE NEED MORE MOMS IN OFFICE?

We also discuss canceling student debt and what that would mean for our country’s economic recovery.
